Fragrance Guide

Find Your Perfect Scent

Choosing a perfume can feel overwhelming with so many options available. This guide is here to help you understand fragrances and find the one that truly suits you.

Understanding Fragrance Families

Fragrances are grouped into families based on their dominant scent character. Here are the main ones:

Floral
The most popular fragrance family. Fresh, romantic, and feminine. Think roses, jasmine, and peonies. Perfect for everyday wear and special occasions alike.
Examples: Chanel Chance, Dior Miss Dior

Woody
Warm, earthy, and sophisticated. Built around notes like sandalwood, cedarwood, and oud. Popular with both men and women.
Examples: Yves Saint Laurent Myslf, Tom Ford Oud Wood

Oriental / Amber
Rich, warm, and sensual. Features notes like vanilla, musk, and spices. Ideal for evenings and colder months.
Examples: Dior Hypnotic Poison, Thierry Mugler Angel

Fresh / Citrus
Light, clean, and energising. Built around citrus fruits, green notes, and aquatic accords. Great for daytime and warmer weather.
Examples: Acqua di Gio, Davidoff Cool Water

Gourmand
Sweet, edible-inspired scents like caramel, chocolate, and vanilla. Warm, cozy, and unique.
Examples: Lancôme La Vie Est Belle, Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb

Understanding Fragrance Concentration

The concentration of perfume oil determines how long a scent lasts and how strong it is.

Type Concentration Longevity
Parfum (Extrait) 20–40% 8–12 hours
Eau de Parfum (EDP) 15–20% 6–8 hours
Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5–15% 3–5 hours
Eau de Cologne (EDC) 2–5% 2–3 hours

For everyday use, an Eau de Toilette is great value. For special occasions or long days, an Eau de Parfum is the better choice.

Understanding Fragrance Notes

Every perfume unfolds in three layers called notes:

Top Notes — What you smell first. Light and fresh, they last around 15–30 minutes. Common top notes: citrus, herbs, light fruits.

Heart Notes — The core of the fragrance. They emerge after the top notes fade and last several hours. Common heart notes: florals, spices, green notes.

Base Notes — The foundation of the scent. Deep and long-lasting, they linger on the skin for hours. Common base notes: woods, musks, vanilla, amber.

How to Choose Your Scent

  • Consider the season — Light, fresh scents suit spring and summer. Warm, rich scents suit autumn and winter.

  • Consider the occasion — Fresh or floral for daytime. Oriental or woody for evenings.

  • Consider your personality — Bold and confident? Try orientals or oud. Elegant and refined? Try florals or light woods. Casual and carefree? Try citrus or fresh scents.

  • Don't rush — A fragrance smells different on your skin than in the bottle. Give it time to develop.

How to Apply Perfume Correctly

  • Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, behind the ears, and inner elbows

  • Do not rub your wrists together after applying — this breaks down the scent

  • Apply to clean, moisturised skin for longer lasting results

  • Store your perfume away from direct sunlight and heat to preserve the fragrance
